With Hearts in Check

If revival truly begins with God’s people, called by His name, who humble themselves and turn from their wicked ways, where do we start? From what do we turn? At which of God’s commands should we begin?

How about beginning with the first?

In Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

The first commandment is to love your God with all that you have, yet we live in a world where so many other things demand our love instead. Fulfilling this first commandment requires us to keep our minds and hearts in check. What are we living for? Ourselves? Our families? Our jobs?

And with hearts and minds set on God, the true revival may begin with us indeed. For the second commandment is that we love our neighbors. Yes, revival begins with prayer, first and foremost, but it doesn’t stop there. Revival is not going to catch fire if we just sit back and watch. We must be genuine in our faith and outpouring in love, for it stir others. And if we seek first God and His kingdom, show love to all, and inspire others, how much more will the flames of revival spread?
