“Pray continually.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17
“Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day.” Genesis 3:8a
As a young girl growing up in my mother and father’s home, I was privileged to be part of a big, extended family. My four siblings and I enjoyed multiple cousins, aunts, and uncles on each side of the family. We also belonged to a close-knit church family, where I remembered a sense of belonging and support.
I loved those nights when we had “company over.” The thought of having company stirred up warm feelings of gratitude and excitement in my heart. It still brings fond memories of lots of games, laughter, conversation, and adventure. I do not hear of people having company too often anymore. It’s a dated expression, but lovely in meaning.
According to dictionary sources, “to keep company,” has several meanings which I believe can apply to prayer. Here’s a look; fellowship, companionship, to associate with habitually, friend, to stay with someone so the person is not alone. I’ve heard it been said that prayer is keeping company with God, and I like that.
Prayer is fellowship with a friend.
Prayer is continually talking to God (1 Thessalonians 5:17) about our everyday experiences, our thoughts, and our feelings.
Prayer is having a companion who never fails you or forsakes you (Hebrews 13:5).
Prayer is listening (John 10:27).
Prayer is walking and talking to God in the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8).
Prayer is trusting a friend who understands our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15).
I pray that your excitement and gratitude will abound as you more fully understand that God really wants to keep company with you! Go on an adventure with God and see where he takes you.
Prayer: Thank you Father for creating us to fellowship with You forever. Thank You for redeeming us in Christ Jesus. Thank You for sending Your Spirit to intercede for us. I ask that we all can find joy in keeping company with You. Amen
