The Seven Words of the Cross – Word #6

Word #6 – Jesus said, “It is finished.” John 19:30

Have you caught the momentum? He needed His father’s help. He forgave the trial-seeking, casting-lot crowd. He blessed His mother and John the Apostle. He called upon God to dispel His sense of aloneness. And now He cries out to all who are in attendance on that bad Friday – that God turned into a Good Friday, “It is finished.” Such few words for such a profound act!

God gave Him an assignment for His life. And John the Apostle in John 17:4 quotes Jesus who says, “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” Hebrews 12:2 says, “He endured the cross and scorned its shame.” All of this was for the joy that was set before Him.

All of these 33 ½ years for this moment! Leaving heaven to arrive here in baby form. Having to put on flesh and be humanly involved with parents, the culture, as well as the Pharisees and Sadducees at the temple. Preaching, teaching, healing and going about doing good was His routine. Betrayal, suffering and mocking along with injustice now has seemingly placed Him here at Calvary. And yet, it is not by accident, His redemptive love ever reaches out to solve our rebellion of heart problem. He is about to pay the greatest price to solve the greatest problem that humanity has ever wrestled with. A sufficient sacrifice for sin. As He approaches this moment, He cries out, “It is finished!”

Now today, you and I know that He sits at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us. But in terms of what He could do while He was here on earth, He finished His task. What a great accomplishment! This completed mission was a fact as well as a statement. But who can deny that the statement was a history changing fact?
