“But you, O Lord, are a shield about me,
my glory, and the lifter of my head.” Psalm 3:3 (ESV)
Read Psalm 3
The situation is dire! Whether that is actually true, or we simply feel this way, we are overwhelmed when this is how we assess our situation. For our current world, the Coronavirus has made many of us feel overwhelmed with what we would agree is a dire situation.
Here in Psalm 3 is King David, God’s King and God’s man. He is on the run from his son, Absalom. Not only is he facing a rebellious child, the opinion of the many is that God will not deliver David. We are often prone to believing people’s opinions rather than listening to God. Yes, David must make a battle plan so he will not face defeat. But how does he calm his heart so that he is not afraid but confident? David, in this Psalm, remembers that God is his protection. God, as his shield, is protecting him completely in every direction. And, God is the One who lifts his head high. David’s confidence is in God! God is the One who chose him as King of Israel and God will protect him against his enemies and deliver him. This reminder of God’s faithfulness and protection allows David to sleep at night and be at rest in his spirit. No matter how dire we believe our situation is, we can choose to place our faith in God through the Lord Jesus Christ. Then we will see that “Salvation belongs to the Lord!”
In fact, placing our confidence in the promise and person of Jesus Christ will offer us both confidence in God’s deliverance and rest for our weary hearts. Jesus promised, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, ESV).
Prayer: Father, the enemy comes in like a flood against your people, your church, and my family, and we look to You alone to save. We praise You this day as our shield, our glory, and the lifter of our head, and we declare salvation belongs to our God! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
