Worship of Faith

Scripture: Genesis 4:1-16; Hebrews 11:4; Psalm 24:3-6

“How can brothers from the same parents be so different? We raised them the same way!” Have you heard a statement like that from parents before? It is easy to feel that way, but the reality is we are all very unique individuals before God.

Abel and Cain were very different in their worship and faith. It is good to take note of the contrast.

Genesis describes the offerings that Abel and Cain made. Cain, a farmer, “brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground.” Abel, a shepherd, “brought of the firstborn of his flock and of the fat portions.” The passage gives an account how the Lord responds to each brother as He looks at the heart of the giver.

The Lord did not respect Cain’s offering, and the Genesis passage hints that it was done in ritual fashion and with improper motivation. The Lord did respect Abel’s offering who “by faith brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings” (Hebrews 11:4).

The Lord accepted Abel’s best offering given in faith with a pure heart. And with this right attitude toward God, Abel worshipped God! Worship is a matter of the heart and a relationship with God! Abel was motivated to worship God with his choice offering and with faith in God his provider.

Psalm 24:3-6 “Who may climb the mountain of the LORD…Only those whose hands and hearts are pure…They alone may enter God’s presence and worship the God of Israel.”

How do we worship?

Is our heart right? Is our worship purely motivated?

Do we worship by faith? When God calls for our offering, do we say “yes” believing in a God who provides for all of our needs and is able to do more than we could possibly ask or imagine?

Holy Father, Holy Jesus, Holy Spirit, may we worship You with our best offering! May we worship You by faith with the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). In Jesus name, Amen
