Worship Jesus

“Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” John 12:3

Scripture: John 12:1-7; Matthew 26:6-13

In the midst of others plotting to arrest and kill Jesus and questioning the identity of Jesus and considering to betray Jesus, we see a woman who knows Jesus. She knows who he is and that he is soon to suffer many things (Mark 8:31).

Six days before the Passover, while Jesus was at the supper table, Mary anointed Jesus’ feet with very expensive, rare perfume often used in burial. She knew who Jesus was, and she chose to prepare her Savior for the day of His burial.

You see Mary had taken time to sit at Jesus’ feet (Luke 10:39). She had spent time in the presence of her teacher, her Master, and in those times God revealed to her the truth that Jesus was going to die. She listened, and now she humbly without abandon worshiped Jesus. She does the thing that seems so right and pours out everything for Jesus.

In contrast, the disciples still did not understand Jesus’ journey to the cross even though He taught them that the Son of Man must be rejected and killed (Mark 8:31). In fact, the disciples were indignant toward such an extravagant display, not understanding the worth of Mary’s worship. Now, Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem. Passover is near, and the Lamb is soon to be chosen.

Heavenly Father, reveal to us the truth of Jesus and the life He brings. We long to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We long to worship Him without abandon! We ask that you reveal to us the things that we need to pour out to Him. In His Name, Amen.
