Very Truly I Tell You, I AM the Gate

John 10:7 “Therefore Jesus said again, ‘Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.’”

John 10:9 “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.”

Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved”

A gate is a means of entrance and exit. It is an opening within a wall or fence that is a measure of protection and defense.  We are thankful for gates that set up an extra layer of defense between our loved ones and any potential danger. We are thankful for gates that allow us into those places of our long-awaited destination such as a vacation spot.

According to commentaries, a sheepfold in the field was a round rock wall with one opening for the sheep to enter. The shepherd would herd his flock into the enclosed area and physically lay down his body in the entrance so that the sheep could not leave and nothing could enter. Jesus as the gate provides great comfort to those who can understand this message that goes beyond the field.

First, Jesus provides protection from those things or people who try to destroy our joy and the security that we have as God’s people. Jesus literally watches over the coming and going of our daily life, so as to keep us from all harm (Psalm 121:7,8).

Secondly, only the name of Jesus offers salvation. “But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life” (Matthew 7:14). Salvation for all mankind is found in no one else. Whoever believes in Jesus will be saved.

Thirdly, whoever enters through Jesus…will find pasture. Pasture life is the good life, the full life. Jesus says, “My purpose is to give life in all its fullness” (John 10:10). It is in Him that we can enjoy contentment and overflowing abundance now and forevermore!

Jesus is our Protector. Jesus is our Savior. Jesus is our abundant Life.

Prayer: Thank You Jesus for being the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep, for me. Thank You that when I accept You as the only way to salvation, I am protected by Your constant care and am supplied abundantly with everything I need. Amen.
