Taking God’s Word to Heart

“Blessed is the one…whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.” Psalm 1:1-2

“I will meditate on your wonderful works.” Psalm 145:5

“My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises.” Psalm 119:148

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Joshua 1:8

What is the first thing on your mind each morning as you arise? Your lack of sleep? The day’s to-do-list? Worry? The drudgery of another day in a broken world? Dear Christian, if the world weighs heavy in your waking hours, make a change and hear the voice of unfailing love each morning (Psalm 145:8).

Joshua was commanded to keep the Book of the Law always on his lips (Joshua 1:8). In order to do that he had to make it part of his inner being and be transformed in his mind (Romans 12:2). It had to be so internalized that the first thing that came to mind each morning was always the Word of God. The book of Proverbs calls us to give attention to the words of wisdom keeping them in the midst of our heart.

One way to take in the Word of God is simply by meditating. “Meditate” in the Hebrew means “to utter.” God calls us to repeatedly and constantly be filling up our hearts and minds with the Word so that the lies of the world are diminished. The transforming power of God’s Word replaces the worry, the grumbling, the to-do-list, and the fear.

As we begin to take hold of His Word day and night uttering the marvelous things of the Lord to our hearts, something changes, and “from it flows the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

Prayer: Father in Heaven, we give thanks to You for Your unchanging promises. We give thanks to You for guiding us to a blessed walk with You. Teach us how to delight in the law of the LORD and to meditate on it day and night! Amen.
