Our Hidden Faults

“Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults. Also keep back Your servant from presumptuous sins; Let them not rule over me; Then I will be blameless, and I shall be acquitted of great transgression.” Psalm 19:12-13

When I read Psalm 19:12-13, it causes me to reflect upon my sins…not something that is particularly pleasant. Contemplation of my sin reveals my depravity, my wickedness, and my ordinary humanity. In this Psalm, David recognizes it may be difficult to “discern our errors” and asks God to reveal and acquit his “hidden faults.” I can replicate David’s plea to request God to help me identify my sins, especially those that are hard to recognize.

David also asks God to keep him back from “presumptuous sins.” What exactly is a presumptuous sin? Presumptuous means failing to observe the limits of what is permitted or appropriate. Therefore, this type of sin is one that falls outside the rules, is of a rebellious nature, and is not appropriate. Oh my…there are many presumptuous sins I could name!

I love David’s heart when he says, “Let them (the presumptuous sins) not rule over me.” With God’s help and forgiveness, we can have victory over our sins. The good news is that once we discern our errors, identify our hidden faults, ask God to eradicate our presumptuous sins, express true remorse for those sins, and repent, God is faithful to forgive us, make us clean, and revive us!

Prayer: Dear Lord, you are mighty to save by providing Jesus Christ to take the burden of our sin all the way to the cross. Thank you for the cleansing, for the redemption, and for the victory over sin! Continue to reveal my sin, no matter how ugly, so I can repent, grow, and become more like Your Son Jesus Christ. Thank You for Your Word and the truth it reveals. I love you Lord!
