What Does it Mean to Stand in the Gap?

“I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one. Thus I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; their way I have brought upon their heads,” declares the Lord God.”   Ezekiel 22:30

The Lord has proven He is just and fair to give us many warnings. Unfortunately, we, as God’s people, do not heed His warnings, nor do we very often act. In this passage, the Lord trusts the prophet Ezekiel to deliver a warning message to Judah and Jerusalem. The Lord is looking for a man to “stand in the gap” for the land so that He would not destroy it.

Could I be that “one man?” Could you? What does it mean to “stand in the gap” for the land? Perhaps that could mean exactly what the Lord outlined in 2 Chronicles 7:14…seeking Him, humbling ourselves, turning from our wicked ways in repentance, and praying. Am I willing to leave my personal comfort zone and authentically do these things? If so, how soon will I obey His command, and how passionately will I heed His warning?

I believe we are at a time when God wants us to look around and wake up…wake up and see that our families, churches, communities, nation, and world are in deep need of people to stand in the gap!

Prayer: Lord, let me be willing to fervently repent and pray as a way of standing in the gap for my family, community, nation, and world. Thank you for the warnings you give us and may we always strive to heed Your call. Thank you for your mercy, forgiveness, grace, lovingkindness, and especially for sending your Son Jesus Christ as the ultimate source of revival. I am deeply grateful that I am saved because of Christ’s finished work on the cross! Amen.
