Even in the Valleys

“You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.” Psalm 139:5

“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book.” Psalm 139:16

Psalm 139 is one of those very well-known Scriptures that people memorize and quote frequently. It has a reassuring message for us and an awe-inspiring understanding of God.

But, does the Psalm lose a little of its popularity in the valleys of life? When you experience a job loss, can you still hear the LORD say, “I know your coming and going, and My hand is upon you?”

When your child is born with a birth defect, do you believe that the LORD will hem you in and not let your life unravel?

When your marriage is facing divorce, can you say, “My Creator has ALL my days ordained for me, and His thoughts for me cannot be counted?”

The valleys of life often give way to grumbling and worry and doubt. If God loves me, why would he permit this sorrow to enter my life? If God knows every detail of my life, how could He let this happen?

Take heart, and be encouraged to keep reading this Psalm of enduring love. Let the theology of an omniscient God wrap around you personally, because it’s not just that God knows everything, HE KNOWS YOU.

Let the theology of an omnipresent God awaken your heart to an intimate, STEP BY STEP TRUST in Him.

Let the knowledge of God’s creating power turn to AWE and WONDER as you believe that same powerful hand is holding you in love and constant care.

Prayer: Our Father in heaven, I trust that when I slip, You will reach out and support me. I trust that when I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, You will light my path. I trust that even though You know my darkest thoughts, You love me still. Thank you God, for Your loving, guiding, protecting presence in every trial of life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
