Disciplining our Thoughts

I encourage you to take time to read through the book of Philippians. It has some of the best advice on how to live the Christ-like life. There are many distractions in this world. There is so much to think about and now that we have 24 hour media access, our minds have many diverse things to sort through. One can become weary just thinking about what is going on around the world let alone what is truth or not. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Paul gives advice to the folks at Philippi that fits us well today..

Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.”

Disciplining our thought life is difficult but is done the easiest and the most consistently when we put thoughts into action.

“Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.” Philippians 4:8-9 MSG®

“Lord, thanks again for Your precious word.  It never ceases to amaze me at how fitting words spoken many generations before are so appropriate for us today. Paul’s advice is encouraging and challenging. Lord, please help me to discipline my mind filling it only with those things that glorify You and thus, edify myself. When I step outside in a few minutes to a cool and clear morning, may my mind be fixed only upon You and Your marvelous grace. When I walk and pray for my family, neighbors, friends and even for our nation’s leaders, may my prayers be a sweet aroma to You.  Please accept my praise to You, I ask in the name of Jesus, my Savior, amen.”
